This week's read

There are 111 open software engineer roles in South Korea right now, spread across 42 companies. A typical role stays open for 54 days before it is filled or pulled, so this is not a market that moves fast.

Look at the week-by-week trend and the slowdown is clear. The week of 7 September had 12 new postings, the most of any week in this period. By the week of 26 October, that had dropped to 8, a 33% drop from the peak. Over the last 30 days as a whole, new postings are still up slightly, 39 compared with 38 in the prior 30 days, but the weekly pace tells you the busiest stretch has passed.

Hiring is concentrated. The top 8 employers together hold 58% of all open roles. 당근 leads with 23 open roles, followed by Coupang with 13, Bjakcareer with 9, and 42Dot with 6. Ericsson, GE HealthCare, Krafton and Metanet round out the top 8, each with 3 or 4 roles.

The experience bar sits well above entry level. The median minimum asked for is 5 years, and 19% of postings want 10 or more. Only 33% of roles state a years requirement at all, so many postings leave it open. By title, 56% are mid-level, 20% senior, and 18% principal, with junior and lead roles making up a small slice.

If you are hoping to work from home, this is not the market for it: only 1% of open roles are remote. On the technical side, Python shows up in 34% of postings, followed by AI and machine learning and C++ at 28% each, then Kotlin at 24%.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Plan to be in the office

Only 1% of open roles are remote, so if you are applying in this market, expect to work on site most of the time.

  • Know the experience bar

The median minimum asked for is 5 years, and 19% of postings want 10 or more. Only a third of postings state a years requirement, so check the listing closely.

  • Start with the biggest hirers

당근, Coupang, Bjakcareer and 42Dot together post the most roles, and the top 8 employers overall hold 58% of all open positions.

New Engineering roles each week

Last 30 days: 39 new roles, against 38 the 30 days before (+3%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 7 November 2026.
