Issue of 2 November 2026

This week's read

There are 684 finance and accounting roles open across Australia right now, spread across 300 companies. New postings in the last 30 days are up 40% compared with the 30 days before that. The typical role stays open for 21 days before it is filled or pulled.

Weekly postings climbed steadily through September and October, peaking in the week of 12 October, then eased slightly in the following two weeks. The overall 30-day trend is still clearly up, so this is a market adding roles, not slowing down.

Hiring is not spread evenly. Deloitte Services Pty alone has 93 open roles, more than any other employer by a wide margin. The eight biggest employers together hold 30% of all open roles, so a large share of this market sits with a small group of firms, including PWC, BPT The Birdanco Practice Trust, Findex and McGrathNicol.

Experience requirements are moderate: the typical posting asks for 3 years minimum, and only 5% ask for 10 or more years. Half of all open roles state a years requirement at all, so for the other half it is worth applying even if you are unsure you qualify. Pay is rarely listed, with only 5% of roles stating a figure, so there is not enough data to say what this market pays.

Qualifications matter here. CPA is named in 29% of postings and Chartered Accountant in 25%, so these are the two credentials employers mention most. On the technical side, SAP appears in 10% of postings and Power BI in 8%, well ahead of other tools. Remote work is essentially absent, with 0% of open roles listed as remote.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Apply even without 10+ years

Only 5% of postings ask for 10 or more years, and the typical minimum is just 3. Half of roles do not state a years requirement at all, so do not rule yourself out.

  • Look beyond the big names

The top 8 employers hold 30% of open roles, led by Deloitte Services Pty with 93. The rest of this market is spread across many smaller companies worth checking.

  • Know your in-office expectation

0% of open roles are listed as remote in this market. Plan your job search around on-site or hybrid roles rather than searching for remote finance work.

Momentum

New Finance roles each week

Last 30 days: 174 new roles, against 124 the 30 days before (+40%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
