Issue of 2 November 2026

This week's read

There are 287 open Legal & Compliance roles in Australia right now, spread across 138 companies. The median role stays open 21 days, so most jobs are not filled overnight. Over the last 30 days, 75 new roles were posted, up from 55 in the 30 days before, a 36% rise.

Look at the week by week picture and the story is a bit different. Postings climbed steadily from early September and hit their highest point in the week of 19 October, with 22 new roles. The week after, it dropped to 19. So while the month overall is busier, the most recent week is not the peak week.

Hiring is concentrated at a handful of firms. MinterEllison leads with 29 open roles, followed by Clayton Utz with 16, and HWL Ebsworth and Sparke Helmore with 12 each. MMC has 10, and Clydeco, ING and PwC each have 7. Together, the top 8 employers hold 35% of all open roles, so a sizeable share of the market sits outside the big names too.

Experience expectations lean toward people with some years behind them. Among the 61% of roles that state a minimum, the median ask is 5 years, and 8% want 10 or more. Financial services is the industry named most often in postings, at 18%, ahead of AML at 10%, insurance at 8%, and construction and banking at 7% each. On the technology side, AI and machine learning is mentioned in 8% of postings, more than any other tool or system listed.

Two things to flag if you are weighing your options. Only 1% of open roles are remote, so most of this hiring expects you in an office. And only 2% of postings state pay, which is too few to say what the market is actually paying for these roles.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Monthly hiring is up, weekly pace cooled

New postings rose 36% over the last 30 days versus the prior 30, but the single busiest week was 19 October, not the most recent one. Don't assume every week will top the last.

  • Big firms, but not the whole market

MinterEllison, Clayton Utz, HWL Ebsworth and Sparke Helmore post the most roles, yet the top 8 employers combined hold only 35% of all open roles. Look beyond the famous names.

  • Office-based roles dominate

Just 1% of open roles are remote. If you need remote work, this market will be a narrow search; most roles expect you on site.

Momentum

New Legal roles each week

Last 30 days: 75 new roles, against 55 the 30 days before (+36%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
