Issue of 2 November 2026This week's read
Australia's IT & infrastructure market has 381 open roles across 164 companies right now. Over the past 30 days, 101 new roles appeared, almost the same as the 102 posted in the prior 30 days, a dip of just 1%. Look closer at the week-by-week pattern though, and the week of 26 October brought 33 new roles, the strongest single week in the past two months.
Hiring is concentrated at the top. Leidos leads with 37 open roles, well ahead of Amazon, Unisys and Telstra, who also sit near the top of the list. Together, the top 8 employers in this market hold a third of all open positions, so a small group of companies is doing a lot of the hiring.
This is not an easy market to break into without experience. The median minimum years asked for is 5, and 16% of roles want 10 years or more. If you're earlier in your career, expect most listings to be aimed at people with a track record already.
On the skills side, Linux, Python and Azure come up the most often, with AWS, Terraform, Ansible and Kubernetes also common asks. ITIL and root cause analysis show up regularly too, pointing to a mix of cloud and operations work.
Two things are worth knowing before you apply. Remote roles are rare, just 3% of open positions are listed as remote, and pay is hardly ever stated upfront: only 5% of postings include a salary. The typical role also stays open for 26 days, so don't expect instant turnaround.
What this means for you
Three things you can act on this week
- Start with the top employers
Leidos has the most open roles at 37, with Amazon, Unisys and Telstra also hiring steadily. The top 8 employers hold a third of all open roles, so it's worth checking their listings directly.
- Expect to show real experience
The median minimum experience asked is 5 years, and 16% of roles want 10 years or more. Entry-level openings are uncommon in this market right now.
- Don't expect remote work or listed pay
Only 3% of roles are remote and just 5% list a salary. Plan to ask about pay directly in interviews, and expect most roles to be on-site or hybrid.
Momentum
New IT / Infra roles each week
Last 30 days: 101 new roles, against 102 the 30 days before (-1%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.
