This week's read

There are 9,875 open IT and infrastructure roles in the US right now, spread across 3,013 companies. New postings in the last 30 days reached 3,646, up 15% from the 3,178 posted in the prior 30 days. Roles stay open a median of 20 days before they come down.

Government contractors are a big part of the story this week. Leidos posted 88% more new roles than in the prior 30 days, and CACI was up 28%. On the other side, Shield AI's new postings fell 68% and SpaceX's fell 40%, though both still have active openings. GDIT leads the field with 302 open roles, followed by Leidos at 228, Peraton at 225 and Amazon at 205. Together the top 8 employers hold 15% of all open roles, so the rest of the market is spread across thousands of smaller employers.

If you need visa sponsorship, 29% of open roles sit at employers with recent H-1B filings, including Leidos, Amazon, CACI and Booz Allen Hamilton. Experience bars are moderate to high: the median posting asks for 5 years, and 18% want 10 years or more. Remote work is scarce, at just 8% of roles.

On pay, 54% of roles list a salary, with a typical range of $110k to $165k across all levels. Mid-level roles typically run $100k to $150k, senior and lead roles $120k to $179k, and principal or staff roles $138k to $213k. Director-level postings, a much smaller group, typically pay $171k to $235k.

Python, Linux and AWS are the most asked-for skills, named in 32%, 29% and 28% of postings. Terraform and Kubernetes each appear in 22%, and CompTIA Security+ is named in 14% of postings. By seniority, 57% of roles are mid-level, 21% senior, and only 4% junior, so most openings are not entry-level.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Target the contractors hiring fastest

Leidos (+88%) and CACI (+28%) grew new postings sharply in the last 30 days. If you have a defense or federal IT background, these are the employers adding roles quickest right now.

  • Check sponsorship before applying

29% of open roles sit at employers with recent H-1B filings, including Leidos, Amazon, CACI and Booz Allen Hamilton. If you need sponsorship, start there.

  • Don't expect remote work

Only 8% of open roles are remote. If location flexibility matters to you, narrow your search early rather than filtering after applying.

Momentum

New IT / Infra roles each week

Last 30 days: 3,646 new roles, against 3,178 the 30 days before (+15%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. Pay is the median of the yearly ranges employers post; level is read from the job title. Visa sponsors are employers matched to the government's own sponsor records. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
