This week's read

There are 284 open Engineering Manager roles in the UK right now, spread across 204 different companies. No single employer dominates: the top 8 names on the list together hold just 13% of all open roles. Hiring has ticked up slightly, with 109 new roles posted in the last 30 days against 105 the month before, and the weekly pace has held steady rather than pulling back.

Look closely at what these postings ask for. The median minimum experience stated is 8 years, and 35% of roles want 10 years or more. That shows up in the titles too: 35% of postings are pitched at principal level and only 2% at junior level, so this title is being used for senior hires more often than not.

If you want to work from home, this market will disappoint you. Only 8% of open roles are remote. Pay is also hard to judge here: just 12% of postings state a salary, which is too few to say what the market typically pays, so you will often need to ask directly or wait until later in the process.

On visas, half the picture is clearer. 52% of open roles sit at companies with recent filings on the UK Home Office sponsor register, including Deliveroo, Accenture, BNY and Capital One. That is a useful starting point if sponsorship matters to your search, though it is worth checking any specific employer against the register yourself.

On skills, AI and machine learning is named in 35% of postings, the most of any technology, followed by AWS at 22% and Azure and Python both at 15%. Agile is mentioned in 20% of roles, well ahead of other ways of working like Scrum or Kanban. Formal certifications barely feature: even Chartered Engineer status appears in just 1% of postings.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Bring senior evidence, not potential

The median posting wants at least 8 years of experience, and 35% ask for 10 or more. Lead with scope and seniority in your application rather than growth potential.

  • Don't count on remote work

Only 8% of open roles are remote. If location flexibility matters to you, check each listing carefully rather than assuming hybrid or remote is standard.

  • Check sponsor status before applying

52% of open roles sit at companies with recent filings on the UK Home Office sponsor register, including Deliveroo, Accenture, BNY and Capital One. Confirm any employer's current status directly if sponsorship is a must.

Momentum

New Engineering Management roles each week

Last 30 days: 109 new roles, against 105 the 30 days before (+4%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. Visa sponsors are employers matched to the government's own sponsor records. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
