This week's read

This week there are 233 open Engineering Manager roles in Canada, spread across 166 companies. A typical role stays open 38 days before it is filled or pulled. New postings are down 5% over the last 30 days compared with the 30 days before, though the pace has climbed back up in the most recent weeks.

Here is the part worth noticing: 61% of open roles carry a mid-level title, yet 78% of postings state a minimum years requirement, and the median ask is 8 years. Three in 10 roles want 10 years or more. A mid-level label does not mean a light experience bar in this market, so read the years requirement closely before you rule yourself in or out.

Pay backs this up. Among the 56% of roles that post a salary, Senior and Lead roles typically pay C$145k to C$197k, and Mid level roles typically pay C$147k to C$196k. Those two ranges sit almost on top of each other, so the title alone will not tell you much about what you will be paid.

Only 12% of open roles are remote, so most will want you on site or hybrid. A further 12% of open roles sit at employers with recent visa filings under Canada's LMIA approvals, among them Scotiabank. If you need sponsorship, that is a short list to start from.

Amazon has the most open roles this week, followed by TD, with CIBC, Scotiabank, Alstom, Jane, MaintainX and Manulife rounding out the top group. On the skills side, AWS and AI and machine learning are each named in 27% of postings, and Agile shows up in 29%, so those are worth having ready to talk about in an interview.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Check years, not just title

61% of open roles are titled mid level, but the median ask is 8 years of experience, and 3 in 10 want 10 years or more. Read the years requirement before you rule a role in or out.

  • Mid and senior pay overlap

Senior and Lead roles typically pay C$145k to C$197k; Mid level roles typically pay C$147k to C$196k. The ranges are close, so ask about scope and team size, not just the salary number.

  • Plan for onsite, check sponsorship

Only 12% of open roles are remote, and 12% sit at employers with recent LMIA filings, including Scotiabank. Confirm location expectations and sponsorship status early in the process.

Momentum

New Engineering Management roles each week

Last 30 days: 100 new roles, against 105 the 30 days before (-5%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. Pay is the median of the yearly ranges employers post; level is read from the job title. Visa sponsors are employers matched to the government's own sponsor records. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
