83% of open roles state yearsThis week's read
There are 2,300 open Engineering Manager roles in the US right now, spread across 1,164 companies. New postings in the last 30 days rose to 1,088, up 11% from the 980 in the prior 30 days. The weekly pace has been climbing steadily since early September and reached its high point on 26 October at 282 new roles a week, holding flat there rather than pushing higher.
This is a senior-heavy market. The median minimum experience asked for is 8 years, and 40% of postings want 10 or more years. Only 83% of postings state a years requirement at all, but where they do, the bar is high: 28% of titles are Principal level and another 19% are Senior, against 48% Mid level and just 5% Lead.
Pay is posted on 64% of roles, covering 1,463 postings, and the typical range across all levels runs from $184k to $252k. Director-level roles typically run $203k to $298k, Senior and Lead roles $174k to $260k, and Mid level roles $176k to $250k. If you are weighing offers, the Director band is worth checking against where your target role sits in that spread.
Amazon leads the list with 119 open roles, followed by Apple at 47 and NVIDIA at 41. JPMorganChase, Northrop Grumman, Capital One, Oracle and General Motars round out the top eight, which together hold 15% of all open roles, so hiring is spread thin rather than concentrated. Capital One is the one name moving against the grain: its new postings fell 36% over the last 30 days, from 25 to 16.
On skills, AI and machine learning is named in 34% of postings, AWS in 27%, and Python in 22%. Agile is asked for in 23% of postings. Certifications barely come up: PMP appears in 2% of postings, Certified ScrumMaster in 1%, and CompTIA Security+ in 0%. Remote roles are limited too, at 13% of all openings, and 48% of open roles sit at employers with recent US H-1B filings, including Amazon, Apple, NVIDIA, JPMorganChase, Oracle and General Motors.
What this means for you
Three things you can act on this week
- Expect a high experience bar
40% of postings ask for 10 or more years of experience, and the median minimum is 8 years. If you have fewer, target the 48% of roles still listed as Mid level.
- Hiring is spread across many firms
The top 8 employers hold only 15% of all open roles. With 1,164 companies hiring, it is worth widening your search past the biggest names.
- Remote options are limited
Only 13% of open roles are remote. If location flexibility matters to you, plan your search assuming most roles will want you on-site or hybrid.
