Issue of 2 November 2026

This week's read

There are 191 open Operations roles in Australia right now, spread across 126 companies. But the pace of new postings has slowed. The week of 19 October brought 27 new roles, the strongest of the last two months. By the week of 26 October that had dropped to 16, a 41% fall from that peak. Looking at the last 30 days as a whole, new postings are down 13% compared to the 30 days before.

If you are applying, expect employers to ask for experience. The typical posting wants at least 5 years, and 13% of roles ask for 10 years or more. Not every listing spells this out, only 48% of open roles state a years requirement, so read the full description rather than relying on the headline number. Roles stay open a median of 22 days, which gives you a sense of how long a listing is likely to be live.

Working from home is rare in this market. Just 3% of open Operations roles are remote, so plan on being in an office most days. Pay information is just as scarce: only 2% of postings mention a salary, which is too few to say what the market is paying for this role.

Uber and Amazon are the biggest named hirers, with Coles Group and DoorDash Australia also among the busier employers. Together, the eight most active companies account for 26% of all open roles, so a large share of the market sits with smaller or less visible employers. On the skills side, SQL and AI or machine learning are each named in 10% of postings, CRM in 8%, and Six Sigma in 6%, giving a sense of what shows up most often in job descriptions. Most roles sit at mid-level: 61% of titles are mid-level, with senior titles making up 16%.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Expect a slower posting pace

New postings dropped 41% from the mid-October peak week and are down 13% over the past 30 days. Fewer new roles are appearing each week than a few weeks ago.

  • Read past the headline on years required

Only 48% of listings state a years requirement, though the median ask is 5 years and 13% want 10 or more. Check the full description before ruling yourself out.

  • Plan for office-based work

Only 3% of open roles are remote, so most Operations hiring in Australia expects you on site. Pay is rarely posted either, with just 2% of roles showing a salary.

Momentum

New Operations roles each week

Last 30 days: 68 new roles, against 78 the 30 days before (-13%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
