Japan customer support hiring picks up 12%, but the roles are technical

New postings rose to 47 from 42 over the last 30 days, yet most jobs ask for Linux, Python or Azure, not just phone and chat skills.

Issue of 2 November 2026

This week's read

There are 149 open customer support roles in Japan right now, spread across 99 different companies. New postings over the last 30 days came to 47, up from 42 the month before, a 12% rise. Week by week the pace built from 7 to 10 new roles a week in September and early October, jumped to 16 the week of 19 October, and held at 15 the week after.

Look closer and this is not a typical support desk market. Linux is named in 19% of postings, Microsoft Windows in 14%, Python in 12%, and Azure in 10%. AI and machine learning, DNS, and TCP/IP each show up in 9% of roles, and Salesforce in 8%. Semiconductors is the most common industry mentioned, at 7%, followed by financial services at 5%.

Despite the technical bar, most titles sit in the middle of the ladder: 74% are mid-level, 11% senior, 8% junior, 6% principal, and 1% lead. Where a postings states a minimum years requirement, the median ask is 5 years, and 8% of all roles want 10 or more. Only 43% of postings state a years requirement at all, so many job ads leave this open.

Working from home is rare here: just 5% of open roles are remote. Hiring is also spread thin rather than concentrated. KLA has the most open roles at 7, followed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise at 5, then AstraZeneca, Medtronic, Salesforce and Zscaler at 4 each, and Agoda and Amazon at 3. Even so, the top 8 employers together hold only 23% of all open roles. A typical role stays open for 40 days before it is filled or pulled.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Brush up on core tech skills

Linux, Windows, Python and Azure each appear in 10% or more of postings. These are technical support jobs more than phone or chat roles, so review these before applying.

  • Plan for office-based work

Only 5% of open roles are remote. If you need flexibility, check each listing closely rather than assuming remote is common here.

  • Look past the big names

The top 8 employers hold just 23% of all open roles, out of 99 companies hiring. Widen your search beyond KLA, HPE, AstraZeneca and Salesforce to the rest of the market.

Momentum

New Customer Support roles each week

Last 30 days: 47 new roles, against 42 the 30 days before (+12%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
