Issue of 2 November 2026

This week's read

There are 201 open Data Analyst roles in Australia right now, spread across 124 companies. In the last 30 days, 66 new roles went up, compared with 49 in the 30 days before that, a 35% rise. But the weekly count has eased since then: the week of 19 Oct hit 19 new roles, the highest of the last 8 weeks, and the week of 26 Oct came in at 17, down 11% from that peak.

Transport for NSW leads the hiring list with 11 open roles, ahead of ASX on 7 and Medibank Private and Westpac Group on 6 each. AGL and Deloitte Services Pty each have 5. Even so, the top 8 employers together hold only 24% of all open roles, so this market is spread across many companies rather than concentrated in a few.

Employers want experience. The median minimum asked for is 5 years, and 7% of postings ask for 10 or more years. Only 36% of roles state a year requirement at all, so for most postings you will not know the bar until you apply. Mid-level titles make up 63% of roles, with senior titles at 25% and lead, junior and principal roles each in single digits.

SQL is named in 38% of postings and Power BI in 30%, making them the two most common technical asks by far. Python follows at 19%, with AI and machine learning and Tableau each at 11%. On ways of working, Agile appears in 21% of postings and Jira in 13%. Certifications are asked for rarely: CBAP in 5%, PRINCE2 in 2%, PMP in 1%.

Two things stand out if you are applying: remote work is scarce, with only 1% of roles listed as remote, and pay is almost never stated, with only 5% of postings including it. That means most of your research on salary and work setup will have to happen in conversations with the employer, not from the listing itself.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Expect an experience bar

The median minimum asked is 5 years, and 7% of roles want 10 plus. Only 36% of postings state a figure, so be ready to make your case even when none is listed.

  • Spread your search wide

The top 8 employers hold just 24% of open roles. With 124 companies hiring, it pays to look beyond the biggest names like Transport for NSW and ASX.

  • Don't expect remote or posted pay

Only 1% of roles are remote and only 5% post pay. Plan to ask about location flexibility and salary directly rather than relying on the listing.

Momentum

New Analytics roles each week

Last 30 days: 66 new roles, against 49 the 30 days before (+35%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
