This week's read

If you are watching this market closely, the trend line matters as much as the headline count. The week of 7 September saw 41 new QA and test roles posted, the busiest week on record here. By the week of 26 October that had fallen to 25, a drop of 39% from that peak. Over the last 30 days, 90 new roles were posted, down 8% from the 98 posted in the previous 30 days.

That said, the market is not thin. There are 367 open roles right now across 190 different companies, and the median listing stays open 37 days, so there is time to apply once you find the right one. Tgs and TransPerfect 4 each list 17 open roles, NVIDIA and Super Micro Computer each have 13, and Axos has 10. QualityKiosk Technologies and Visa each list 7, and DXC Technology has 6. Together, these eight employers hold 25% of all open roles, so the rest of the market is spread thin across many smaller employers.

On skills, Python is the one to know: it shows up in 34% of postings, well ahead of Java and Linux at 16% each, Selenium at 15%, and SQL at 14%. AI and machine learning is named in 13% of postings, with Playwright and JavaScript each at 11%. For ways of working, Agile is asked for in 27% of postings, Jira in 12%, Scrum in 10%, and root cause analysis in 9%. Among certifications, ISTQB appears in 5% of postings, while CCNA and PMP each appear in 1%.

Experience requirements here are moderate. The median minimum asked for is 4 years, and only 5% of postings want 10 or more years of experience, though just over half of all postings, 51%, state a year requirement at all. By seniority, 60% of titles are mid level, 17% senior, 12% junior, 7% lead, and 4% principal. If you are hoping to work from home, know that only 5% of open roles are remote, so most hiring here expects you on site.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Hiring pace has eased since September

Weekly new postings are down 39% from the September peak, and the 30-day total is down 8% too. Expect fewer fresh listings right now than earlier this autumn.

  • Python and Agile are the common asks

Python appears in 34% of postings, and Agile in 27%. Selenium, SQL, Java, and Linux all show up in a sizable share too, so these are worth having ready to discuss.

  • Plan for on-site, not remote

Only 5% of open roles are remote. If location flexibility matters to you, narrow your search early rather than assuming remote options will turn up.

Momentum

New QA roles each week

Last 30 days: 90 new roles, against 98 the 30 days before (-8%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
