This week's read

Hiring for Solutions Engineer roles in Australia is up 15% over the past 30 days compared with the 30 days before. But look at the weekly trend and the picture is less simple: the week of 19 October was the strongest of the last two months, and the most recent week sits 21% below that peak. The month is still ahead, but the pace inside it is slowing.

The market is wide rather than concentrated. There are 224 open roles spread across 153 companies, and the top 8 employers together hold only 19% of them. Amazon has the most open roles on its own, followed by Canon, Cisco and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. With hiring this spread out, it is worth looking beyond the biggest names.

This is not an entry-level market. Only 2% of open roles are titled junior, while 45% are titled principal and 38% mid. Most postings that state a requirement ask for a median of 6 years, and 17% ask for 10 years or more. If you are earlier in your career, you will be competing for a small slice of the roles on offer.

Among the skills named in postings, AI and machine learning comes up most, in 29% of them, followed by AWS in 23% and Azure in 21%. Remote work is scarce: only 13% of open roles are remote, so most hiring expects you on site or hybrid.

Pay is rarely disclosed. Just 3% of postings list a salary, which is too little to say what the role typically pays in this market. Roles also tend to stay open a while, with a median of 40 days from posting to close, so there is no need to rush an application the day it appears.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Match the seniority bar

Only 2% of roles are junior while 45% are principal and 38% mid. Most postings ask for a median of 6 years, and 17% want 10 or more. Aim at roles that fit your actual experience level.

  • Look past the top 8 names

Amazon, Canon, Cisco and Hewlett Packard Enterprise lead the list, but the top 8 employers hold only 19% of the 224 open roles. With 153 companies hiring, check smaller names too.

  • Don't expect pay listed

Only 3% of postings show a salary, so there isn't enough data to say what this role typically pays in Australia. Be ready to ask directly or negotiate without a posted range.

New Solutions Engineering roles each week

Last 30 days: 86 new roles, against 75 the 30 days before (+15%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
