This week's read

There are 467 open Solutions Engineer roles in Canada right now, spread across 241 companies. New postings are up 62% over the last 30 days, 172 compared with 106 in the prior month. Weekly postings jumped to 57 in the week of 19 October and stayed at 57 the week after, so the pace has not pulled back from its high point.

Look closely at the titles before you rule yourself out. 61% of open roles carry the word "principal", but the median minimum experience asked across all postings is 7 years, and only 27% ask for 10 or more. In other words, a lot of roles labelled senior are not necessarily asking for a decade of work.

Pay does not split much by level either. Among the 41% of roles that post a salary, senior and lead roles typically run C$122k to C$176k, while mid level roles run C$121k to C$168k. Those two bands overlap almost entirely, so a senior title does not guarantee a higher offer.

Remote work is scarce here: only 10% of roles are remote, so most of this hiring expects you in an office or on client sites. Visa sponsorship is limited too, with only 16% of open roles at employers who show recent filings on Canada's LMIA approvals list; Capgemini and BDO are both on it. Hiring is also spread thin: the top 8 employers account for just 25% of all open roles, led by Emplois sur GROUPE TEHORA with 38 openings, followed by Capgemini, Sierra and Softchoice at 13 each.

On the skills side, Azure is named in 26% of postings, AI and machine learning in 25%, and AWS in 21%. Agile is the most common way of working mentioned, at 13%. Certifications barely register, with CCNA, CISSP and AWS Certified Solutions Architect each appearing in just 2% of postings.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Apply even with a senior title gap

61% of roles say "principal" but most only ask for 7 years of experience, not 10 plus. Do not filter yourself out based on title alone.

  • Check pay bands before assuming

Senior/lead pay (C$122k to C$176k) and mid level pay (C$121k to C$168k) overlap heavily. A senior title is not a guarantee of higher pay here.

  • Look beyond remote and the big names

Only 10% of roles are remote, and the top 8 employers hold just 25% of openings. With 241 companies hiring, it pays to look past Emplois sur GROUPE TEHORA and Capgemini.

Last 30 days: 172 new roles, against 106 the 30 days before (+62%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. Pay is the median of the yearly ranges employers post; level is read from the job title. Visa sponsors are employers matched to the government's own sponsor records. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
