This week's read

The weekly numbers tell the clearest story here. The week of 14 September saw 42 new software engineer roles posted in Ireland, the high point of the last two months. By the week of 26 October that had fallen to 23, a drop of 45% from that peak. Over the last 30 days as a whole, 124 new roles were posted, down 15% from the 146 posted in the previous 30 days.

Even with the slower pace, there is still a fair amount open: 265 roles across 110 companies, with a typical listing staying open 36 days before it is filled or pulled. Cisco leads with 18 open roles, followed by Amazon on 16, then Qualcomm and Salessense tied at 12, Fmr and JPMorganChase at 11 each, Toast on 8 and Bentley Systems on 7. Together these eight employers hold 36% of all open roles, so a large share of the market sits outside the biggest names.

If you need visa sponsorship, worth knowing: 49% of open roles sit at employers with recent filings on Ireland's employment permits list. Cisco, Amazon, Toast and Bentley Systems are among the top employers on that list, so roles at firms like these are a reasonable place to start if sponsorship matters to you.

The experience bar is on the high side. Among roles that state a minimum, the median ask is 5 years, and 11% want 10 or more. By title, 37% of roles are labelled senior and 15% principal, against 36% mid and just 5% junior, so most of what is open sits well above entry level. Remote work is scarce too, at just 5% of roles, and only 11% of postings state a salary, too few to say what the market typically pays.

On skills, Java and Python lead by a distance, named in 51% and 44% of postings respectively, with AWS at 31%. REST APIs and C++ each appear in 27%, and AI and machine learning skills show up in 24%. Agile is the most common way of working mentioned, in 33% of roles, well ahead of Scrum at 8%.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Expect to show years, not just skill

61% of roles state a minimum years requirement, with a median ask of 5 years and 11% wanting 10 or more. Junior-labelled roles make up just 5% of postings, so lead with your experience, not just your stack.

  • Remote is rare here

Only 5% of open roles are remote. If you need to work from home, narrow your search early rather than hoping to negotiate it after applying.

  • Check sponsorship before you apply

49% of open roles sit at employers with recent filings on Ireland's employment permits list, including Cisco, Amazon, Toast and Bentley Systems. If you need a permit, start your search with names on that list.

Momentum

New Engineering roles each week

Last 30 days: 124 new roles, against 146 the 30 days before (-15%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. Visa sponsors are employers matched to the government's own sponsor records. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
