This week's read

There are 422 open Product Manager roles in Canada right now, spread across 287 companies. New postings slowed to 203 in the last 30 days from 229 the month before, an 11% drop. The weekly count tells the same story: it peaked at 64 new roles in the week of 14 September and has since eased to 55, down 14% from that high.

No single company dominates this market. The top 8 employers together hold just 12% of all open roles. Mastercard leads with 11 openings, followed by BMO with 10, and Manulife and TD with 6 each. Geotab, which has 5 open roles, is on Canada's LMIA sponsor list, and overall 12% of open roles sit at employers with recent visa filings.

This is not an entry-level market. The median minimum experience asked is 5 years, and 15% of postings want 10 or more. Mid-level roles still make up the largest slice of postings at 45%, but senior and principal titles together account for a large share too, at 26% and 20%. A job takes a median of 34 days to stay open, and only 15% of roles are remote.

Half of postings list pay, and the typical range across all levels runs from C$130k to C$170k. It moves a lot by level: mid-level roles typically pay C$98k to C$135k, senior and lead roles C$140k to C$180k, principal and staff roles C$156k to C$225k, and director roles C$150k to C$215k.

AI and machine learning show up in 32% of the 387 postings read in full, well ahead of any other skill, with SQL at 8%. Agile is named in 28% of postings, with Jira and Scrum each at 13%. Certifications are rarely required: CSPO appears in 3% of postings, Professional Scrum Product Owner in 2%, and PMP in just 1%.

What this means for you

Three things you can act on this week

  • Look past the biggest names

The top 8 employers hold only 12% of open roles. With 287 companies hiring, casting a wide net across smaller and mid-size employers is likely to turn up more opportunities than chasing a handful of big names.

  • AI and machine learning stand out

AI and machine learning are named in 32% of postings, far more than any other skill. If you have hands-on experience here, make it visible early in your application.

  • Use the pay ranges to negotiate

Only half of postings list pay, so use the typical ranges by level, from C$98k to C$135k at mid level up to C$156k to C$225k at principal, to set expectations before you apply or negotiate.

Momentum

New Product roles each week

Last 30 days: 203 new roles, against 229 the 30 days before (-11%). Each week counts the same companies, and a role counts as new only in the week it was posted, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth.

How we count

Ashney reads companies' own careers sites directly, hourly, not job boards. A role posted for many cities counts once, and staffing agencies are left out. A role counts as new in the week it was posted, and every change is measured at the same companies in both periods, so a careers site we start reading never shows up as growth. Pay is the median of the yearly ranges employers post; level is read from the job title. Visa sponsors are employers matched to the government's own sponsor records. The written read is by the Ashney Intelligence Engine from this issue's numbers only, and every number and employer in it is checked against them before it is published. This report is written weekly; issue of 2 November 2026.
